Using Docker COmpose.yaml to install PBS

Hi Tom, and others.

I am wanting to run PBS and a couple of apps in TN Scale as normal apps rather than as Containers or with 3rd party apps like Dockge.

I am now attempting to blend the information from Tom’s guide on PBS on TN Scale - Toms Guide
and other info on using custom yaml with compose file to run a docker container in the app page for easier management.

I followed the guide produced by a fellow here:
docker compose and custom apps with yaml file
Techno Tim has a YT vid on it too - I can’t link it sorry but it’s ID is watch?v=gPL7_tzsJO8

I’m not having success; I think the problems I have had getting up and running with this approach are permissions related.

I want to blend what’s in Tom’s tute with the compose file approach so I can make myself more structured guides and backup of my install method in case I need to rebuild it all in a couple of years.

I’d really like some assistance on this and hope some in the forum have this working and can explain what I need to do.

My compose file below… it’s had a range of revisions as I am working on the permissions side.

services:
pbs:
image: dockurr/proxmox-backup:latest
container_name: pbs
hostname: pbs
user: “568:568” #Map container identity to native TrueNAS ‘apps’ user
restart: always
ports:- “8007:8007” #Secure backup web interface port
environment:

  • PASSWORD=MyPW #PASSWORD HERE
  • TZ=Australia/Queensland #local timezone
  • PUID=568 #Override inner daemon user account to TrueNAS ‘apps’ ID
  • PGID=568 #Override inner daemon user group to TrueNAS ‘apps’ ID
    volumes:

Application tracking data stored securely on your App Pool dataset

  • /mnt/Pool2-Apps/pbs:/etc/proxmox-backup
  • /mnt/Pool2-Apps/pbs/.data:/var/lib/proxmox-backup

Master backup targets stored on your primary Backup Pool dataset

  • /mnt/Pool1/pbs-backups:/mnt/datastore/pool1-backups
    tmpfs:
  • /run # Creates clear memory scratch spaces for user logins
    stop_grace_period: 2m

I have not tried doing this but also I don’t like the idea of running someones third party and not official version of Proxmox backup. Proxmox backup has strict rules around permissions, have you asked the project maintainer how it should be setup?

I haven’t tried this, but I would just spin up a debian docker image, then ssh into that and try to install PBS manually

Hi Tom and Louise,

thanks for raising some points I’ve not considered from an experienced perspective! I am not well versed in what can run in a standard VM and what is “ok” to run in a docker container.

PBS is meant organically for VM or LXC container according to the author; there are docker variants though. I didn’t realise they were an adhoc creation beyond the organic program.

I did have it in an LXC container on truenas. I wanted to have it in a more easily controlled setup where reinstalling could be more seemless also if I had my server die.

My linux skills are very old and unused. I’ll go back to the container approach and will just document the full install for the case of having to redo it.

If you have advice on a path to creating a full script I could keep to run it that would be helpful.
I do pull snapshots to my backup server - I guess that’s where I need to focus more for rebuild anyway from a practical point but I don’t use the skills enough to fluently redo things from scratch (I hope that makes sense :stuck_out_tongue: ).

Cheers

This tutorial on the proxmox forum seems to be producing the same outcome as your own YT video.

I note that you produce more specific boundaries for the permissions.

Where do you consider best to learn about the underlying knowledge you have applied for that part? I’ve seen your video on permissions but I 'm still flaky on the POSIX, NFS and ACL differences as well as the construction of the permission strings.

My knowledge comes from reading the Proxmox Documentation and testing. My tutorial you linked in the original post has all the steps.

Thank you sir.

I’m going back to some of the fundamentals to understand more of what steps you list are actually doing.

I appreciate the focus on my needs Tom.
