Hey everyone,
I got interested in Alta Labs as a possible alternative to Ubiquiti since Tom covered their wireless APs back in 2023 (thread here https://forums.lawrencesystems.com/t/can-the-alta-ap6-pro-access-points-compete-with-ubiquiti-unifi-youtube-release/17982), but that was the last time I heard anything from this brand. No new products, last controller image is from may 2024, barely anyone talking about them online…
Has anyone been using or deploying their products during these last 2 years? What’s your experience?
PS: Double checked when writing this post and they are releasing 2 new products this week. Good timing I guess
I’m curious to know what unifi can’t do that Alta can. For me unifi AP’s do it all and I’ve deployed a ton of them everywhere.
Alta seems to focus on simpler cloud management, but UniFi still has the edge with a more mature ecosystem, better firmware, and stronger community support. Curious if anyone has used both and noticed real differences in performance or reliability.
Alta labs seeming to be playing on the one thing most hated by many MSP/IT companies: Not having a partner program. I prefer UniFi’s direct model over putting having some reseller markup process that does not really add any value, only cost to the product.
I don’t see anything else compelling about their option and last I check their self hosted option did have cost, but they seem to have suspended the cost but still requires a licence key from them.
Received an NFR kit from Alta labs, so far just tested one of the AP Pro units. Software is super easy, they host the cloud which may be an issue for some. The Alta product line is very basic so far, No point-to-point bridge yet, and not yet released of a 48 port poe. However, I think they are on the right track with POE switch output, they are coming with more POE power on all switch ports for same pricing as unifi. Firewall specs so far as way behind unifi, I will be testing soon to see where it’s at.
Yeah, they are not even close to feature parity with their products which does no make them a compelling choice.
