Hi All,
I had a USG - P3 and last year switched to pfSense. It turns out that I no longer have the time or energy to manage the new one and am considering going back to a Unifi Gateway. My only requirement is that I work from home so I have two sources of Internet for failover (Starlink and PepLink). I know the USG didn’t provide great support for that previously but have heard they have improved on that.
Can anyone tell me if in fact Unifi has a non-cloud gateway that will handle failover gracefully? I don’t want to go enterprise grade, but I need it to work. I am running a Cloud Key Gen 2 also.
Their website is a little difficult to traverse for me for some reason. Hoping you experts can help me out. Since I don’t need a controller, I don’t think I need one that starts with “Cloud”. so with that in mind, I see three that might work: Gateway Fiber (UXG-Fiber), Gateway Max (UXG-Max), and Gateway Pro (UXG-Pro)… thoughts?
I don’t need a UDM as I have a Synology for my cameras (still implementing that one). Unless I don’t understand the total use of the UDM’s.
Any guidance is greatly appreciated.
Thank you so much!
Your research so far is correct - only the UXG series can be adopted by a controller, all other models (Cloud, Express, or Dream naming) run their own local controller. The actual feature set available on UXG is nearly identical to UCG models, when adopted by a UnifiOS controller (Which the CKG2 is). There are some features that aren’t available when adopted to a controller hosted on non Unifi hardware (and not by Unifi themselves), but that doesn’t apply to you.
There have been some bugs over time but at present I believe most users are happy with the multi-WAN functionality of UnifiOS 4.x / Network 9.x - I only have a single WAN so can’t say for certain.
Which exact UXG model is right for you mostly depends on the ports you need, and slightly depends on the internet connection speeds you have. But likely the UXG-Max will suffice. There is also the UXG-Lite which you didn’t list.
One thing worth noting is that while their UXG model can be adopted and run using the same controller software, they are generally slower on the firmware needed to have all of the latest features. They do get the updates, but often later.
Oh my, I suppose it makes more sense to go with the Cloud Gateway Fiber or Max and get rid of my Cloud Key? Is it possible to import my current controller to them? I’m assuming they are all on version 9 by now.
Does it look like the dual WAN is working better on the 9 version vs the old USG?
Yes, you can import your existing UniFi setup and config. I did that when I moved to the UDM pro for my studio network.
Thanks Tom. Any comment on the dual WAN working any better? I did watch that video, I love your videos.
I have heard it works better, but I have not really tested it.
Thanks Tom. Appreciate it!

Wow! Been watching daily for the Cloud Gateway Fiber to be in stock. Checked a little bit ago and it was - ordered it and 10 minutes later is out of stock again. Holy Cow! Glad I was watching so close. My confirmation says it will ship soon.
