Unifi IP Cameras

Can anyone confirm if I run a Unifi Controller in a Virtual Machine, if I were to buy a new G5 Unifi camera it would be adopted ? I have it running but I don’t see any option for Protect unless I’m missing something.

Or must I buy a CloudKey+ in order to use Unifi cameras ?

I don’t have any unifi kit and would use my QNAP as an NVR.

You can’t self host the protect system. You have to use a CloudKey+, NVR or one of the routers that support the full application stack, not all do.
