Unifi Controller ip change

Hi everyone,

I have a unifi controller hosted on a vps. It’s registered in all my unifi devices via it’s fqdn. I want to move to controller to another server so I restored the backup on the new server and changed the ip address in my dns record. All the ap switched to the new controller without any problems, but some switches and all the gateways are still on the old one after a few days. I’ve also tried to reboot some gateways but nothing changes.

Do anyone have any ideas on why this could be?

Best regards

I have moved controllers many times but rarely had any issues, I would SSH into the switch and check DNS to make sure it’s going to the new controller.

You are the mercy of dns replication across the internet - some dns servers are quicker at updating the records.

Also if the devices are pointing to an internal dns server, this can slow things down as the dns server needs to see the ip address range.

Not much you can do

I would make the dns change on Friday, so hopefully over the weekend everything catches up.

Good news, devices will still work if it can not communicate back to the unifi controller

Thanks for the replys.

I’ve done this migration too in the past, but never had any issue. The strange thing is that in all the sites there is this mixed behaviour. AP switched to the new controller, while gateways and switch didn’t.

If I roll back the changes all the ap switch to the old one without any problem.

Fortunately as you have pointed out this does’t cause any problem to my clients.

Have you looked at the “Inform Host” option in Settings->System? I have used this in the past to force devices to a new UniFi controller.

Thanks, this solved my issue. I maually checked all the sites in the old controller and it moved all the devices to the new one. Thanks again everybody for the help.

Glad to help! This helped me when my controller had to change public IPs as well, so I knew it should do the trick.
