Unifi Controller Backup & Restore

We’re in the process of consolidating our hypervisors to XCP-NG. Previously, VMware was our primary environment, while Proxmox served as our test platform. Over time, our Unifi Controller—originally hosted in an LXC container on Proxmox—became much more critical to our operations.

The challenge we’re facing now is that there’s no straightforward way to back up and restore an LXC container to XCP-NG. Given that, has anyone successfully used Unifi’s backup and restore functionality, particularly for multi-site management? We currently manage 18 sites with over 100 Unifi devices, and manually resetting everything due to a failed restore would be a huge headache.

When we originally migrated the controller from a domain controller to this LXC, we used Unifi’s “live migration” feature—but it ended up breaking the controller, forcing us to reset everything manually. Before we take any risks with this migration, I’d love to hear from anyone who has tackled something similar.

Any insights would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you,

Chris

I have used the backup restore and it worked well.

We have backed and restore config file to new Unifi controller - never had an issue.

After creating the backup file, switch off the old server

Just make sure the ip address of the new controller is the same as the old one , or if using dns record you change it to point to new server

Double check your firewall rules, just to confirm it is pointing to the new server
