I recently picked up a UDM Pro with the intention of doing an all Unifi networking and surveillance build. Unifi claims the UDM Pro can do 3.5G with IDS/IPS turned on… While it can handle my 1G connection it’s at 60% CPU usage without IDS/IPS and 80% with those settings. I only have 2 computers and a PIhole connected to it currently. I’m having serious doubts that it will be able to handle 8 cameras on top of that since the CPU is already almost maxed.
I’m really considering picking up a Protectli V1211 and running OPNsense on that, but it’s really hard for me to gauge how much faster it will really be than the UDM. If I went that route, I would probably just pick up an Optiplex and install Blue Iris on that. That’s kind of intimidating because it seems like the configuration can be kind of complicated. It comes with the benefits of being able to use higher quality cameras from other vendors and a lower total cost.
What do you guys think, can the UDM Pro handle the additional load when it’s already struggling with my network traffic alone? If not, is OPNsense and Blue Iris worth the additional effort to setup?
I don’t know how many 4K cameras you are going to run. Its possible it can handle cameras on top, but there is this calculator for the pro Max on load.
If your using the UDM as a recording device and gateway/edge security device, its possible it will become overloaded.
Expecting a device to do too many functions at once is a recipe for disappointment.
The last network layout I had built as a suggestion for a friend had NVR related stuff offloading to a dedicated device, and routing/edge security strictly on its on device.
Yeah, that’s the conclusion I came to after thinking about it. The unifi setup works the best for my use case, so I’ll just order an NVR. Assuming the UDMP can’t handle it, that is.
Kind of makes the $379 price tag on the UDMP feel bad, though. I feel like if all I’m doing is routing, I can probably get a much more capable device for much less.
A bit unrelated, but thank you @jayman for sharing that link for the calculator. I live in Canada and the UniFi Canada store doesn’t offer it. Only by switching to the US store did the option for it appear. I honestly had no idea it existed!! Very useful knowledge
Yeah, I just broke down and bought an NVR. Figured I might as well just get it now and get everything set and done at once. It’s easier than going back and adding it later or finding out that a lot of my surveillance footage is trash if something happens.
