Truenas ZFS Backups

Question about ZFS replication from one truenas to another truenas

We have a truenas server at one location, and this is attached a windows domain, so that we can set folder / file permissions inside the SMB share

We replicate the dataset to another truenas server offsite, using replicate tasks.

Question.

The backup truenas server is not attached to the domain so can not see the domain users and groups.

Does the replication task also copy the folder / files permissions ? So in the event of a failure of the main truenas, it is just a case of joining this main to the domain

If it does not is there another way to have a backup server will all the correct permissions

ZFS replication is a block level transfer of all the data which will include the metadata that holds the permissions.

Hi Tom, have you all done a setup video on this (backup your TrueNAS to a friend’s TrueNAS… encrypted so they don’t have access to your data)? do both TrueNAS systems need to have a domain setup so if there is any rotating IP from ISP they continue to talk to each other? this is likely a newbie topic for people like me… still learning to homelab.

Older video so some menus may have changed a bit but should still work much the same way. You can use Tailscale to connect two systems together and then it won’t matter if the IP addresses change.
