TrueNAS CE (Scale) vs 45 Drives Houston

My Google-fu has failed me.

I haven’t seen any comparisons between TrueNAS Community Edition (Scale) and 45 Drives Rocky Linux+Houston (for a more apples to apples comparison).

Anyone have experience, or have seen a comparison (video or written)?

I have experience with TrueNAS, but I am curious how Houston compares.

Thanks

Also does this work on “any old pc” for a DIY build? Might be interesting to play with and I have a spare storage server.

I would imagine as long as the “any old pc” meets the minimum system requirements, I don’t see why not. As you can download both to install on your system of choice.

Some hardware-specific addons might not work though.

@LTS_Tom, if I remember correctly, in one of your videos you mentioned your company has deployed both to clients.

Do you use Houston on the 45Drives hardware, or TrueNAS?

If the former, what are your thoughts compared to TrueNAS?

Perhaps this could be a suggestion for a future video.

If you have the resources, I’d say install it and see what you think about it.

I have not tested the most recent versions of it, but it’s only kinda comparable to TrueNAS. While you do get a web UI for managing ZFS functions where it’s lacking the more polished control that you get with TrueNAS, especially for things like replication.

Thanks.

Always appreciate your insights.

I have run Houston UI on both Rocky and Ubuntu, as well as plain Cockpit and Webmin on Ubuntu and I use TrueNAS scale as my daily driver for my main NAS. Houston UI is far superior to plain old cockpit or even webmin. Houston is just no where near as polished as TrueNAS.
