Is the paid-for version of Tailscale lower latency than the free version?
No mention of it on their website: https://tailscale.com/pricing
Also it wouldn’t make much sense. Tailscale is built on Wireguard. Once two peers have gone through the process of establishing a connection, which involves a coordination server, they communicate directly. Traffic isn’t routed through any intermediary servers unless a direct connection could not be established.
I am not aware of any latency difference between the versions.
I thought Tailscale depended on the nearest DERP servers?
This is the main reason why I ditched Tailscale. Tailscale internet speeds were extremely slow as it had to connect through their DERP servers and then to my pfSense which already was behind a VPN (IVPN & Surfshark).
I switched back to the Wireguard client and the speeds went back to normal.
No. Tailscale falls back to forwarding packets through relays only if a direct connection is not possible.
Using tailscale status
you can check whether the connection is direct or through a relay.
