For a 5 pc small business that uses mostly web based apps, and only needs some form of active directory for logins and file storage, a many-thousand dollar server seems a bit overkill. Synology has their own flavor of AD and stores files. What about a Ubiquiti UNAS Pro for storage instead? Will it connect to Microsoft EntraID for authentication? They have all Ubiquiti hardware already…. Thoughts?
You could use something like zentyl for an AD server/fileserver, that might do the trick. I am partial to ZFS for it data integrity, but you could probably stand up a small VM on on a system that supports ZFS.
Is frequently how we handle those setup and the UniFi NAS will also tie into that authentication.
For what it’s worth,I used Zentyal for years at my office and was never especially happy with it. I recently migrated to Univention UCS and I’ve been pleased so far. The interface is much more performant and logical, the capabilities seem much more robust, and the documentation is way better.
I also tried Zentyal for a few weeks and it seemed kinda antiquated to me. I think it is a free Linux-based solution if you want a server for Windows clients and was recommended by someone who uses it for many of his business clients, so it should be fine for a small business.
Since I don’t run any Windows I replaced it with other solutions. I did not like the UX.
