SFP Pon on Cloud Gateway Fiber

Hi! Planning to Switch from OPNsense to CloudGateway Fiber. Currently, I’m using ODI SFP Pon for my WAN connection and it has a speed of 2.5Gps. I’m just wondering if this would synchronize with the built-in 10Gps SFP Port that comes along with Cloud GateWay?

Are you already running OPNsense with the PON optic directly in the firewall? and it works?

I’m using a media converter. Yes, it’s working perfectly

Interesting! I’d say ‘yes’ then; I imagine it’ll work just fine. For all intents and purposes, that port on the UCW is just a switchport like any other, so it should ‘just work’. The UCW port supports standard port speeds so it should negotiate to something the optic also supports (assuming is was built in a standard-respecting way). and even if it doesn’t negotiate speed, you can manually set the port in UniFi.

What internet service speed do you have?

I’m mainly familiar with Calix gear - they have a ONT-on-a-stick product but kinda, sorta works if directly plugged into 3rd party gear. It’s meant to plug into their own gear then the firmware basically “joins” them together effectively making a single NID. Anyways, that’s still cool.

There are messages in Unifi forum that it really works. Not sure though if it would synchronize to 2.5G as that is my max PON speed. Internet speed is 700/600

Yeah, it really just depends on the PON optic. Assuming we’re talking about GPON here: yes, the WAN (PON/ISP) side of the optic has 2.5d/1u Gbps worth bandwidth (from the OLT’s perspective) available, but the LAN (electrical/subscriber) side may only be capable of up to 1Gbps, so that’s what it’d negotiate at with your UCG.

Now you have me curious. What’s the make/model of the PON optic you have?

It’s HSGQ ODI.

UCG Fiber has a SFP Port Wan with speed up to 10Gbps. I’m really wondering if that port could be tweak to sync with 2.5G so I could max out my PON

What specific model? There are a few.

Like I said, I’d expect that port to be able to be set to 2.5Gbs. HOWEVER, whether the optic will work with that, who knows. Even if you get the UCG to link at 2.5Gbs with the optic, you certainly shouldn’t be able to pull more than your service package (700/600) - that’s part of your ISP’s service provisioning on your ONT.

Here you go:

I think you best bet at this point is to just try it. If all else fails, you’ll just continue doing what you’re doing now - using a media converter.

Thanks for your thoughts, Russ. I might consider Route 10 from Alta labs as it supports what I need. Just need to check the reviews first
