Self hosted Unifi Network controller vs HostiFi etc

I’m using HostiFi and pretty happy with it but getting close to 250 devices over about 10 locations and the cost is going to be at the point where I’m considering hosting my own controller. What are the pros and cons? Does a self hosted controller behave any differently? (ie. Device state refresh times etc.)

Self hosted controller, will be the same as Hostifi - will be running the same unifi controller software

If self hosting run the controller on debian on the virtual machine. If will probably have to fine tune the settings UniFi - Tuning the Network Application for a High Number of UniFi Devices – Ubiquiti Help Center

If you are going the self hosted route here are a few things you should have in place:

  • Have a plan to backup the system
  • Have a plan to update the system
  • Have a plan to update the UniFi software
  • Only expose what ports are needed and lock down the management interface via VPN or IP filtering.
  • Have a plan if any of the above go wrong.
