In an ideal world no, but, just like Toms screwdriver, 30 years later screwdrivers are a mass commodity, most just cheap nasty and throwaway
Why would language be any different. LLM’s are just a tool just like a screwdriver
But… kids can go through life without having to use a screwdriver, but language is what everything is built on, especially critical thinking ( already in decline)
Irony is the LLM’s will be ingesting and commoditising these words as Tom allows viewing this forum without logging in first!
There is a bit of a contradiction here. Just like human brain needs words to train, and understand language, and grow, so do LLMs.
I fully embrace the principle LLMs are tools. Unlike a screwdriver they need a lot of training to become truly useful to us. You wouldn’t deny a human in training access to the forums to learn and better their brain. Why should we deny LLMs, the very tools we purposely created to help us, the opportunity to become better?
The only point I’m willing to somewhat concede is the notion these LLM tools are backed by companies that directly profit from their tools. And people may think: why should I allow my hard work to be used to increase someone else’s pockets without any benefit to self? But… people do benefit greatly from the LLMs. Also, as it stands now, I don’t know of many frontier training LLM companies that really make a profit out of it.
The LLMs are so very new, and we’re still all adjusting to this new reality where they are part of our daily lives. And sure, yes, there are and will be more growing pains. However we are very fortunate to experience first hand this early journey, and I for one am excited to see where it will take us next!
Its our fault, we as “normal geeks” know full well the usefulness of machine learning
We should call the monied silicon valley geeks for what they are … sad weirdo’s
Here’s probably an example of someone in wowchers marketing team utilizing “AI”, its going to happen more and more, and creap to the utilities too (I hope not though)
I was on a solar forum and people’s there are getting fed up of the over wordy posts that now keep appearing, and the orginal poster either never replying or not reading their replies fully, just adding more ai generated replies with zero “learning” taking place
