Scrubbing old drives before deactivating from NAS

Hi there, my Synology recently started to report a warning on one of my HDDs. I have replaced said drive now but am left with a HDD that I want to dispose of cleanly. Does anyone know if there is a Synology feature that allows you to srub the HDD before you remove it. Beyond physical destruction it would be great if there was a “Srub HDD” feature you could run before deactivation and removal.

Can anyone suggest anything?

Thanks

I don’t know of anything directly on the Synology (although I haven’t looked so maybe there is), but I use ShredOS which is an open source OS that is designed to securely erase drives. It can be booted and run from a USB drive. So you just need some way of connecting the drive to be erased to a computer.

Go into storage manager, and select the drive you want to wipe. Select “actions” and “secure erase”

Thanks all. I wish I had know about that before I pulled the drive out and replaced it - would also have been helpful if synology helped you by suggesting it before you deactivate it - activatePopup(“Before you deacticate this drive, would you like to Secure Erase it first before in case you want to dispose of it?”) - or something like that.

Would you advise if it is ok to stick it back into the NAS just to wipe it and then pull it out?

That’s a solid approach :+1:. Using the built-in Secure Erase/Shred options in Synology’s Storage Manager is usually more than enough for safe drive decommissioning, and adding an external wipe (like a full zero-fill or third-party tool) gives extra peace of mind if the drives will leave your possession.

And good point about monitoringpairing Synology’s native reports with something like Phonexa or other analytics tools can really help spot storage trends early, keep track of capacity/performance across multiple NAS units, and reduce the chance of unexpected warnings.

As long as you pull all of the drives out before sticking the old ones back in, it should be fine. Do a full shut down first though.
