RS1221RP+ new disk installation

hi, I’m looking for suggestions as to how to install a new set of primary disks on my RS1221RP+ NAS. It currently has 2 volumes, Primary: 1: 4x8TB, Secondary: 2: 4x6TB.

I have purchased 4x 8TB to replace/refresh the primary volume.

My thoughts were:

First: Perform a whole system backup to another NAS

then ..

(a) To pull 1 disk at a time from the volume replacing with a new disk and letting the RAID magic work, I’ve not tried this before but I don’t see why it shouldn’t ..

(b) Remove the secondard volume, install the new disks as volume 3, copy all the shared folders and then when complete, removing the primary volume and making volume 3 the primary and then putting volume 2 back.

Does anyone have another way??

thanks!

Personally, it may not be the fastest way, but I would restore from backup for two reasons: First, it ensures that your four original disks stay intact. Second, I would really want to test my ability to restore from backup to make sure my backups are set up effectively and will work in an emergency.
