Residential DVR

I have a VERY old Zmodo DVR circa 2008 (Type DVR08B, Model D9108BH) that still runs but I believe to be quite insecure. It’s one of those cheap, made-in-china (what isn’t these days) DVRs that, to monitor it, you need to use “internet explorer” with an active-x plugin running to view it. I keep this on its own VLan cordoned off from the rest of the networks. After updating my phone I realized my old APK for viewing these cams remotely is also “not allowed” in the new world. Way past time to upgrade.

What would be the community’s recommendation for a low-cost but relatively secure 8-channel DVR that I can install in place of my old one without having to upgrade wiring and cameras for my home? The in-place cameras use the BNC type connectors and a barrel type connector for power.

It is only insure if you allow access from the internet. Normally you have to use the cameras manufactures for dvr devices

Being that old, with bnc connectors I would say it will be hard to replace.

If your existing cameras are still functioning and use BNC with coax and barrel power, I’d recommend looking into hybrid DVRs that support both analog and IP input. Brands like Hikvision and Dahua (or their OEM variants) often offer reasonably priced models with much better software, mobile app support, and security updates. Just make sure whatever you get allows local viewing without requiring a cloud account if privacy is a concern.
