RDP Drop outs over site-to-site VPN

Hi

We have users that are using Remote Desktop over a VPN and about 4 times a day their sessions gets disconnected. There does not seem to be an obvious reason to why this is happening.

Has anyone come across this before?

We are using PFSENSE on both ends using a site-to-site VPN using IKE v2

First step is always checking the logs.

What logs am I looking at?

I have checked windows logs but that just shows there has been a disconnect.

Look at the logs in pfsense and see if the VPN is dropping. Setup a ping test over time that goes over the VPN.

Checking the IPSec logs…

I have some rekeys but I have the VPN to make before a break. Where would I see an actually drop in the connection?

I have installed a ping plotter and currently have a constant ping going, thank you!

It also might be good looking at the event viewer logs on the RDP server. If all else fails you might be setting a packet capture to find our more.
