Printer on the internet?

So I was in the doctor office and glanced over at the printer that was spitting forms for me to fill out, and noticed it had a tag with the printer network name, and an IP. Started with 139.

Is this really a good idea in a HIPPA compliant office?

This is a new and a big enough satellite office that I’m surprised their IT department was using a routeable IP.

Seems very strange to me!!

I have seen many networks where someone decided to use public IP space for the internal range. They are often networks that they had less than good IT person doing the setup.

I agree with Tom. We have NAT for a reason.

We do have NAT for a reason, though this is not the one.

I think using non routable IPs is good for security, but I understand your point about IP exhaustion.
