Pfsense to Unifi

I’m doing it. I’m making the switch. I’ve been a pfsense user for 10 years (with Ubiquiti Switches and APs), but I just bought a UDM Pro Max. The firewalls rules on the UDM seem way more complicated than on pfsense, but I’m excited to jump in and figure it out.

I’m a bit nervous about losing some functionality: HA Proxy, pfBlockerng (ASNs and EDL downloads), native Tailscale, and granular control over Snort. But I’m excited to gain application recognition (I just wish they’d incorporate that into policy based routing) and identify based access. Plus, I think it’ll be nice to finally have unification between my FW, APs, and switches.

I switch to VyOS and I was a pfsense user also for about 10 years. Still considering UniFi, but like you said there are some missing features I wish UniFi included.

For the firewall you have 2 options. You can go the traditional route which are the input, output and local chain. Or you can deploy the zone firewall which I recommend doing for simplicity and easier management. Tom has some great videos on how the zone firewall works in UniFi.
