Interestingly nothing at all appears in tcpdump on that interface - no traffic whatsoever.
You might want to start a thread on the Netgate Forum; there are more people over there that might have hit this.

Incase anyone wants to know what my pfsense hardware is:
Does the network card have a realtek chipset? I will presume yes since the interface shows up as re01, which usually indicates a realtek chipset. I have had realtek nics working in pfsense just fine however, yet i would still try and use an intel and / or broadcom chipset. Also, just check the network cables just in case. was cursing a while ago to only find out i had a bad utp connector.
