For some reason after the update PPPoE does not connect.
The only way I currently have internet is the cellular backup line…

restoreing the config file did not do the trick. is the only way to do a clean install?
Yes, untill we’re well into the realm of the new ZFS Boot Environments, you’ll have to do a clean install and config restore to perform a downgrade to an earlier version.
Before doing that though, have you looked at the logs to see what might be causing the issue?
Status > System Logs > PPP
