Opinions Wanted: Repurpose Synology NVR 1218?

I currently have a Synology NVR 1218. This NVR is running DSM 6.2.4 which is the latest as of this post. The NVR has 2x 8TB WD Purple drives. Standard hardware is 2 cores and 1GB of RAM. These NVR has licenses for 4 cameras. I am considering repurposing this device as I would like to expand to additional cameras. Please provide input:

  1. Keep hardware and DSM software as is but add additional camera licenses.
  2. Keep hardware and DSM software, but remove “surveillance” duties and use only for shared folder/hyper backup duties. Surveillance duties get handled my Zoneminder on another machine.
  3. Try to force some other OS onto the unit. Suggestions?
  4. Other?
