Open source (?free/community edition?) software defined networking

Thank you for the great 2019 video on “Zero Tier”

In 5 years has the world of Open Source Software Defined [LAN] networking progressed?

Has any better options come to light?

My background is with Cisco DNA Center and Catalyst 9200/9300 switches.
I realize Cisco’s SDN product leverages high end custom asic edge switch hardware. (exhibit a – if I recall correctly the C9200CX is the most entry level ‘small’ switch that is SD-Access ready, and least expensive)

I am always looking at what other people are using, and I am thinking about exploring (in my dev lab) open source alternatives for Soft

Netbiard is popular open source overlay VPN option.

i am not sure what you are after when you say SDN.
You mention that Cisco harware uses ASICs. True. pfSense will never be able to compete performance-wise.

You can take a look at DPDK, it is used as routing plane in the really big routers.

DPDK things you can try for free are netgate TNSR (Tensor) or VyOS VPP.

It would if they use TNSR. It uses VPP which should be way more performant than your typical kernel processing pfsense uses. I agree with ya.
