Tom’s latest Synology video got me to wondering what the best solution for Office 365 backup is.
We’ve tried Veeam, there is now a new MS product (but is still tenant connected) and of course there is Synology.
If we are looking for an on premise backup which would you all recommend? Is it worth getting a Synology for that purpose and if so, which one?
Finally if we get a Synology for that can we also use it as an NVR or is it better to have separate systems for those purposes.
If you use Synology for Office 365 backups, I would have it be a dedicated unit for security reasons. If you have an NVR and open it up to the public to make it easier to use remotely there is risk in that. Keeping that risk isolated to a single system on a different network would be a better option.

One more follow up here for everyone.
I noticed on Synology’s website a footnote that says secondary backup not available for O365 backups. Does this mean I can’t backup my backup to S3 or another Synology? Seems a bit odd to lock in my data on a single server.
Does anyone have any experience using Synology with O365 backup or best practice recos?
No. I use a Synology to backup O365 stuff and ESXi. This gets replicated to a Synology at my parents house.
I would agree with Tom and keep things separated. You open a whole new can of worms when opening for external services.
I’m personally not a fan of opening it up anyways and the only external access is done via Wireguard. Their quick connect is no more secure than just port forwarding.
In have both of the units connected this way. I just pay for my parents internet so I could choose the FW, etc. Cost me a little extra in the beginning but it gave me more control and I was able to make their network more secure lol.
