NIB QNAP Rescued from E-Waste and Made Useful with TrueNAS

As a retro computer repair guy I regularly patrol the local e-waste site. Found today was a new without box (still sealed in plastic tho) QNAP TS-464-8G (2.5Gb!). I’m guessing someone ordered it online, then read a few QNAP reviews and decided to toss it without even opening it.

Anyhoo…I rescued it, installed TrueNAS on it and re-badged it more appropriately. Was a quick and satisfying way to keep just one of our toys out of the landfill and put previously poorly used hardware to good use. Huzzah!

The only bad thing about QNAP hardware, is the software. x86 NAS series from QNAP are actually very solid built machines when it comes to internals. Only thing they cheap out, are plastic cases that are not very good in quality. Everything else is very good. Also, some of them even have two LAN ports. And QNAP is playing safe by putting Intel LAN chips inside. This makes them ideal for pfSense routers or custom NAS devices. Especially if you can get a model with 10Gbps expansion cards.
