Unifi Cloud Gateway, any thoughts?
I have fiber and would struggle to pay for the kind of PFsense box i’d want but my sh-- box wifi router that’s pretending to be a cell repeater (it’s really not, thanks t-mobile you cheap jerks!) is not able to keep up with the fiber. This would do for the near to mid future, i could add pfsense in later as an IDS/IPS function I suppose.
Why would you add pfsense for IDS/IPS when that box does that at 5Gbps? (Unifi just calls it “Intrusion Prevention” with options “Notify” or “Notify and Block”)?
Just because you have fiber internet doesn’t necessarily mean you need this one with an SFP+ port - if your ISP doesn’t let you replace their ONT with an “ONT on a stick” SFP module then you’re just going to have an ethernet connection to it, and the UCG-Ultra or UCG-Max may be a cheaper option for you. All of the Unifi gateways (UCG or UD* models) have the same networking features, just different ports and speeds (and some have options for additional Unifi services they can host).
The UniFi gateways are not as flexible as pfsense when it come to reassigning the ports for LAN to WAN so I don’t think your idea will work.
