New Truenas Scale Build

Good morning all,

My current Truenas system runs on a 2U, 12 Bay E5-2600 V1 server which I have filled completely with drives, so I am looking to move to a new 4U, 36 Bay E5-2600 V4 platform. Specifically, potentially looking at this ebay listing. My biggest two questions are as follows:

  1. For CPU, what is the best balance of clock speeds vs cores?
  2. What is the optimal amount of RAM for a system like this?

For context, I currently have 1 pool with 4x 16TB Exos drives, 1 pool with 4x 4TB Ironwolf drives, and 1 pool with 4x WD Blue SSDs. The workload on the server is mostly just network shares (SMB, NFS, iSCSI) for my Proxmox stack and personal computer. I do not plan on using the virtualization ability inside of Truenas.

Thanks!

of what I read, truenas prefers faster clock than cores. As for optimal ram, the more the better.

The more memory the more that can be used for the ARC (ZFS read cache) which will help with network share performance.

So would something like 2x Intel® Xeon® E5-2637 v4 (4 core/ 3.5Ghz) be sufficient? Or would I need more cores?

This cpu would be fine, just load ram as much as you can.
