Need more storage

The first raid 5 are sas 15k’s. So I’ll just go to ssd sata for the new raid 10 and move the hyper Vs there.
For backup I’m using SolarWinds and using a synology nas as the speed vault.
I might make the synology run a full hyper v backup as well.

Should I stick with Dell certified drives? Or can I just add some Samsung ssd drives?

Also, when I move the hyper Vs, should I use the export method?

Also, maybe I should add a Synology Nas and move all the file sharing data to it. What do you think?
I figure it helps with ransomeware protection and frees up a lot of space.

You’d probably be fine with say Samsung 970 Pro drives. Dell certified are nice but might not be easy to find for a reasonable price.

You should be able to use the “move” function to move the storage live over to the new array once it’s build. https://www.nakivo.com/blog/hyper-v-storage-migration-guide/

I think the Synology NAS can do snapshots as well as replicate to another NAS. Probably not a bad move to add a bit more resilience for ransomeware and file deletion.

Aren’t 970s m.2? Do you mean 870?

Woops, yep 970s are NVMe only. I meant 860 Pros, I run some as OS disks and they report well in iDRAC.

I see 870 QVOs but no Pros, I’d avoid any EVO or QVO drives and only go Pro if you go the Samsung route. The TechSupplyDirect link I posted earlier has 800GB drives for $170 still with the caddy, which look cheaper than the 860 Pros.

Depends if you want new vs refurbished.

I’m not too comfortable with refurbished, I don’t know.
So the Samsung pros show in Idraq? You mean the stats?
I put some Samsung evos in my person Dell server and they work but idraq won’t show lifespan etc.

This is what the 860s show in iDRAC

Doesn’t fill out all the info, you’d probably need Dell drives for that.
