Migrating to Unifi

Hi Steve here 20year Networking veteran

Project; migrate from HP switches + router to Unifi

Currently HP3800 a dozen vlans, hp as central static routing. no routing protocols, nothing fancy

Purchased a Unifi USW Pro Aggregation 10g SFP+ switch (excellent value), plugged in TrueNas x2 @10g, XCP-NG x3 @10g, 5x edge switches etc

created some vlans in Unifi to test, (these vlans also exist on HP) can use the Agg switch as a router, but can’t migrate any existing. can’t change those vlans from “3rd party router” to anything else. if i delete the vlan all of the ports in that vlan change to vlan1.

Purchased a Cloud Gateway MAX (has 10g ports) can’t move from 3rd party to it either.

Do i need to do some acrobatics with save/restore to keep my edge ports in the right vlan?

I would really like to do this in a controlled manner and not just cross my fingers and swing the Ax.

if i need to pay for a few hours of consulting, then that’s fine.

Maybe I am not clear on the ask, but you can change an existing VLAN from “Third Party Gateway” by going editing the network and choosing the pull down and it will not make any port tagging changes.

under Settings, Network, (vlan name), Router there is a drop-down menu but all of the options are greyed out, can’t select any of them. If i create a new Vlan, then i can select.

Odd, I am running Network 9.4.19 and I tested this on two different systems and both worked.

In your screenshot is LTS Studio a Cloud Gateway?

Our controller is a Cloud Key Plus, but the Cloud Gateway Max has it’s own cloudkey built into it. Do i have to migrate to that cloudKey, so it will appear in my list of Routers?
BTW We have a non-Unifi firewall with many Site-to-site vpns and VIPs.

Yes, LTS Studio is a gateway and you have to have a gateway in the controller to be able to choose it. So yes, migrate to the Cloud Gateway Max.

Thank you for your time. It’s nice to have someone with a testlab so i don’t have to test these things in production. and keep the videos coming, big fan.

You will need to recreate the VLANs under the cloud gateway Max-UniFi would not let you switch from “3rd party router“ directly. Avoid deleting VLAN. Instead, create the same VLANs on the new gateway, reassign ports manually, then migrate one VLAN at a time for a clean transition.
