Migrate UniFi Self-hosted Controller to Cloud Gatway Possible?

I have someone that wants to replace a self-hosted Unifi controller with a Cloud Gateway Ultra in order to eliminate the controller and the ISP provided router. My question: Is there a way to migrate the configuration for the access points and SSIDs into the Cloud Gateway? If not, we could just reconfigure the gateway to match the controller, reset all the APs and re-adopt. Just wanted to see if anyone has done it as it would be slightly less work.

No, cloud gateways can not be adopted by self hosted controllers. They have built in controllers.

If you want firewalls to be adopted by a self hosted controller then you need to buy the UXG line.

Yes, that is correct but I’m wanting to migrate the configuration of the controller into the gateway, then remove the controller.

Should be simple enough to export the config and import into the gateway.

It’s possible for sure.

When I switched from self-hosted to a UCG, that was my original plan. However, there are a lot of settings in the UCG that don’t really exist in the self-hosted (firewall rules, etc.) so you’re still going to have to spend time setting things up.

Ultimately, I decided to just document everything and recreate from scratch (I still created a backup in case I changed my mind). It also provided me the opportunity to really review everything which allowed me recreate some parts in a better way. It was also a good refresher with simply understanding everything since I was forced to actually think about everything again.

Readopting everything was simple enough as well.

That said, if the environment is large and complex with many UniFi devices and such, I would understand not wanting to redo everything!

Migrating works fine, I have moved systems from self hosted and cloud keys over to a UniFI Gateway with a controller

Thanks everyone for sharing your experience with this. It helps knowing what to expect and I have a plan to move forward. Have a great day.

I second the theory of documenting and then rebuilding in the modern gateway.

Unifi keeps moving the cookies and I’m not complaining too much as they seem to be improving the recipe as they go along).

Plus having a document that lays out what you want the network to do is of value.

When you do then build it again you will get to know how to find the settings again in this current unifi menu iteration.

To Readopt the APs that are already deployed you might want to factory reset them (one at a time) from the old controller then subsequently adopt them on the new. This will save you having to climb a ladder for each one to manually reset them.
