Linux want shut down on PC

So I the switch to Linux from Windows. I have tried Ubuntu Desktop and Bazzite and both distros the pc will not stay powered off on shutdown. It will shutdown and then 1 sec later the system will power back on. This did not happen using Windows. Have updated to the latest bios and even tried system defaults still no luck.

I tried to update grub with either apm=power_off or acpi=force and tried a sudo shutdown force. Still the system will power right back up.

System specs

i7-14700k

Z790 Aorus Master X

32gb ddr5 ram

MSI RTX 4070 Super

This doesn’t sound like a linux problem to me. Sounds like a hardware failure.

Will try install windows again but had zero issues while on windows prior to moving to linux.

I’ve never has a problem shutting down a linux computer from the GUI, and I’m no expert.

There are a couple different flavors of this command from terminal that you could also try:

sudo shutdown now

sudo poweroff

Random restarts on the Z790 Aorus Master X are often caused by unstable idle power states (C-states), BIOS bugs, or memory instability. Key fixes include disabling C8/C10 states in BIOS, updating to the latest BIOS (F12B or newer), or setting PCIe to Gen3.

@pavlos

Not sure where you got Random reboots from. That was never mention in my post. But thank you?

Well….. Hmm Linux broke my PC!!! Windows for life :(…. just kiding. but seriously everything was working just fine before switching. Issue happens with fresh install of windows. Going to install all drivers first and such. Maybe reflash the bios or go back to previous one.

I think the system did shut down when i first started trying Linux on this pc but I updated and flash bios and i dont remember which i did first to say that was the cause. But it did work prior to switching to linux.

A detailed description would help.

No reason to mess with grub.

Is it a dual boot pc? does windows hibernate and restart?

Boot from a usb, “try Ubuntu” and click on shutdown. It will turn off.

Did someone messed up with BIOS? reset BIOS to default state and try again.

If Ubuntu is installed, you can look at /var/log/syslog which will tell you when it rebooted.
My pc rebooted Jan 21 and Jan 29. The reason, it went from kernel -90 to kernel -94

zgrep "Linux version" /var/log/syslog*
/var/log/syslog.1:Jan 29 14:23:57 cw kernel: [ 0.000000] Linux version 6.8.0-94-generic (buildd@lcy02-amd64-114) (x86_64-linux-gnu-gcc-12 (Ubuntu 12.3.0-1ubuntu1~22.04.2) 12.3.0, GNU ld (GNU Binutils for Ubuntu) 2.38) #96~22.04.1-Ubuntu SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Fri Jan 16 13:19:05 UTC 2 (Ubuntu 6.8.0-94.96~22.04.1-generic 6.8.12)

@pavlos are you not reading what i am typing?

Any way.. Problem solved.

  1. tried installing all drivers into windows. Still system will not stay powered off.
  2. reflashed bios back to older version. still not working
  3. changes some power settings in bios. still not staying powered off.
  4. forced system off by holding power button. Onced powered off, i flipped the switch on the back of the psu. Unplugged the power cable. flipped the switch back on pressed and held the power button along with pressed a few times to fully drain the system of power. Plugged back in powered on. Once at desktop click shutdown and the system stayed powerd off.

I powered it back on and clicked shutdown 3 time in a row no issues now. Just very strange that this happend just when i switch to linux. Not blameing linux but just strange.

Well in for another reformat and reinstall linux again.

I read every post.

Your solution: drain the pc completely, then shutdown works, either with Win or Linux.

My take: your m/b has hardware issues, some capacitors do not discharge properly and leave the m/b in an unknown hardware state. If m/b is under warranty, replace it. What are your psu specs?
