I’ve used a dozen or two of the airMAX NanoBeam 5AC and airMAX NanoStation 5AC Loco, connecting buildings via PTP bridge. They’ve worked well and rarely had issues.
I have a job (family member out of state in Michigan) coming up for a full rip and replace that needs a PTP from home to the barn. Is it worth the extra $300-400 for the Unifi bridge compared to others?
A single pane of glass is nice. Current internet speeds are about 60/10 mbps so speed isn’t too big of a bonus. I’m currently trying to find a better ISP for my brother.
I’m also curious to hear any thoughts about the Building Bridge (UBB).
I’ve used the UBB a couple of times now and it works great plus easy to setup. Having all the details in the Unifi interface makes troubleshooting easier although I have not had any issues. Wish it was a bit cheaper though. I have also used a U7 Outdoor and shot a UDB-Pro at it. A little bit cheaper and you get WiFi coverage on the U7 side. Runs just as fast as far as I can tell.
Thanks for the reply. I never considered the Device Bridge Pro (UDB-Pro). Looking at Google Maps, the PTP is only about 150 feet.
Maybe I’m dense, but I assumed the UDB-Pro was only for one device and not for extending the network. However, research has shown people using these as PTP bridges for extending their network.
Today I found out a local ISP is willing to pull coax to his house (1000/50mbps), which means I’m leaning towards something with a little more performance. The barn will have a golf simulator and hangout area with multiple TVs, cams, and wifi.
I like the UBB solution in locations I already have UNIFI deployed, so I just drop it in place adopt and done. Super easy , fast and reliable
In the scenario you mention the UBB will work for sure, but the nanobeam set would be more than enough to handle this too and at a fraction of the cost.
If your site has UNIFI already and cost is no issue I would go with the UBB for consistency and management.
I want to choose a Nanobeam to save money. However, it might not be easy. There is an existing camera in the soffit. I’m going to move this camera cable to a garage media panel. I will use a Switch Flex to provide data and power to the PTP, Camera, and Garage AP. I don’t see an easy way to add 24v POE without AC power injector. I’m comfortable running AC in my own home (I’ve done a lot), but I don’t run AC in others.
I’ll most likely use the Device Bridge PRO or the UBB due to the normal 48v POE I can get from the Switch Flex.
