A few years ago I switched from UDM Pro (as a firewall, plus the Unifi Network Application)…to PFSense and a locally hosted unifi controller, because I have 28 Unifi switches, and 30 Unifi APs and the UDM Pro couldnt handle it. However I would like to switch back… and get the single management pane again… BUT can the UDM Pro Max handle it?? It has the same CPU just a 2.0Ghz instead of 1.7Ghz. I do see RAM is 8GB instead of 4GB though. I see they advertise the UDM Pro Max can handle 200+ devices, and the UDM Pro at 100 devices… but honestly the UDM Pro gets really bogged down beyond 25 devices… and thats only running ‘Unifi Network’ and firewall… no other apps
You can use this to help figure out capacity
But I don’t have enough of these out in the field under management to really tell you that there are no issues, people have told me they work fine, but I don’t manage them.
Their capacity calculator is very misleading compared to real life. I have a Cloud Gateway Max and I use the Ad blocker, IDS/IPS, and Geo Filtering in addition to running 4 WAPs and 5 cameras. The CPU hovers around 45% usage but the memory is running at 80%. It can feel slow at times but the capacity calculator says with everything I have running it should be about 66%. Kinda feels higher than that.
Just my $.02
