How to measure dedicated vs commercial WAN links?

Hi,

We have a 200Mbps dedicated link to our network, as well as a “business” link of 750mpbs.

Speedtest gives us an accurate reading of 200Mbps, as well as iPerf, but my question is, given that it’s a dedicated link, how should it be measured?

Speedtest also gives me 750Mbps on my “business” link wich is probably shared with other 25 other tenants, and my home 350Mbps link shows 350Mbps but that one is definitely shared with over 50 people according to what some friends at the telecom company have told me.

Therefore, I have to assume that Speedtest is not the way to correctly measure a dedicated 200Mbps link, but I’m lost on how to make sure that the Telco gives me what my company is paying for in terms of bandwidth.

Any insights would be highly appreciated

You should find out, such as the details of the SLA, what the speed is dedicated to. Your ISP can’t control anything outside their network, and they might not guarantee anything outside your geographic region. There might be specific speedtest.net servers within their network to which they’ll honor complaints if you get slower speeds. At the end of the day your dedicated link is just to the nearest Point of Presence, and then they should have enough capacity to the PoP for all the dedicated customers plus whatever is appropriate for the shared customers to share.

thank brwainer, according to their SLA they are providing the bandwidth promised, however I was wondering if there is a test I can perform so I know that they we are not sharing that speed with anyone else.
