Hello,
I’ve been working on setting up a dev network environment over the last few weeks, and it’ss been a challenging process filled with some serious headaches.
One major issue was a a bug or perhaps a “feature-incomplete” Kea DHCP server whichever you’d prefer to call it. It seemed there were multiple instances of Kea running in the background, causing DHCP cannot bind errors. DHCP couldn’t bind to the correct ports because it thought there was another running in the network. Although this doesn’t really feel like something that should require an upgraded support subscription. I’d still like to have them review and confirm my configuration is good for best practice, etc. I’m also have some additional issues with my OpenVPN config.
What has everyones experience been with TAC Pro?
I have never used their support other than to RMA a dead system and that was smooth. We also are still using the older DHCP server until Kea becomes feature complete. Also for most clients with on prem AD that provided DNS and DHCP.
What are the concerns with using ISC which is now 3 years out of support? Has pfSense been adding any maintenance to the distribution?
To be honest, I’m a bit frustrated with Netgate over all the bugs I experienced with the firewall. I think my next project will be with OPNSense. I didn’t end up buying the support.
The pfsense CE version is still receiving patches as needed and while ISC DHCP is not getting updates there have also not been any new bugs found that warrant an update. Netgate is still adding new features to their pfsense+ version that is free with their hardware.
