Handwritten note taking that let me store my notes locally on my Windows PC?

Hi, I’m looking for a handwritten note taking app that allows me to store my notes locally in my PC efficiently and doesn’t bother relying different cloud services like OneDrive or Google Drive.

OneNote is free as long as you have a Microsoft account. All the others I have looked in the past you had to purchase a license and many were industry specific.

I quick search turned up this article:

Depend on your requirements - have you look at notepad

Not a Windows tool, but the notes function on my Onyx Boox Tab Ultra C works well, if you couple it with cloud, it will store off site, and the handwriting recognition is pretty decent. Mine is not connected to cloud. The newer color eink tablets in their lineup have better color.

I have not tried handwriting on a Windows tablet since Win2000 or maybe XP.

Another not windows, a lot of people at work use Kindle Scribe tablets and like them for note taking, I’m guessing they blast them back through OneNote to our m365.

OneNote is good but I don’t like handwriting on it.

Again, not windows, but here is a short overview of the Notes application in the Boox tablets:

The Air 4c is the “upgraded” color display to my tablet, they shifted the color layer to a different position in the stack and colors are “more vibrant” than my generation. I also like their NeoReader a lot for PDF and epub, the library system lets you organize things into neat containers. And the large display with color allows things like screen shots in a PDF to actually work well. Lots of money, but might be worth it for some people. The optional keyboard on mine is also nice if you need to type things.

I do have a Windows11 2 in 1 with a battery pressure pen, but I’ve never thought of using it this way. My son has a Scribe that he uses for work and for some college courses, he likes it a lot too, but I’m not sure which application he uses, it’s not OneNote even though they are an m365 facility too. I think he said he uses the built in notes application that Amazon provides.

Xournal++ has a portable version for Windows, no installer needed. I may through that on mine when I get a chance.

How is your handwriting experiencing with this.

do you use it to take handwritten notes?

Hey, I have researched about Nebo, and found some reddit thread saying it is not good for PC and not works properly. Do you personally use Nebo on PC?

Thank you all for your reply, I have checked all suggestions you have given me, in the last few days. I liked the Xournal++, as it is free and open source but I find that it has limited options for handwriting, but still it is worth it. Apart from that I am also considering using notability on my PC, it looks good and also gives me the facility to store my notes locally on my PC. So I will try both of them and see which one I should use.
