I recently switched from Spectrum to AT&T fiber as well as switching to a Netgate 4200. Since then I have had issues with forward and reverse lookups on my LAN. When looking up a hostname via NS lookup, in Terminal, on my Mac, it responds with IPv6 addresses and DNS server information. Any suggestions on where to look first, in pfSense?
Services > DHCPv6 … disable it.
Thank you. Forward/reverse lookups on internal domain names and IPv4 addresses not working. Still investigating.
my pfsense is also dns/dhcp, 10.0.0.1
There are two pc's under it, cw and xps
host cw: nsloopup xps replies 10.0.0.44
host xps: nslookup cw replies 10.0.0.41
I use DNS Resolver, last three ticks are checked.
HTH
I’m still having issues. I have turned off IPv6 so that’s all set.
However, I am unable to ping/lookup hostnames of my internal static assignments. The only forward/reverse that works is the pfSense box itself. Otherwise, I’m not sure where to look. I will note that I am using the “Kea DHCP” because there is a note that the “ISC DHCP” server will soon be depricated.
Any suggestions are appreciated.
Thank you.
Do you have internal DNS entries made on the DNS server?
Hi @xMAXIMUSx, yes, I do. Thank you.
Have you tried another device other than your Mac to see if the issue persists?
Hi @xMAXIMUSx. Yes. I have tried with the pfSense, under Diagnostics > DNS Lookup. I get an error, host could not be resolved.
You say you’re using the Kea DHCP. I do not believe all the features have been implemented that ISC supports.
Here is the link to the Netgate docs: 2.7.1 New Features and Changes | pfSense Documentation
Wow. Great find. Thank you.
@LTS_Tom - this might be a good topic for a future pfSense video.
I seem to recall that @LTS_Tom did mention this in a video a while ago… but I could have read/seen it else where…
Cool. I’ll have to look back.
I am still using ISC DHCP server until the other one catches up with the features.
Thanks. I’ll switch back and do the same. Thanks everyone!
