Fiber to RJ45 converter

Hi guys, i been trying to search both here and google but can’t find out exactly any concrete answer to this.
I basically would like to convert my fiber cable to a standard RJ45 so that i can use a fw/router/gateway like this:

I been looking at something like this:

Any downwside to this? latency or something?
Any other similar product that you guys recommend? I don’t mind paying for quality

ps. i have also found a bit more expensive alternative that take SPF instead of the fiber cable directly. Not sure why these are more expensive. It seems more cumbersome to use another module in between so if there is no downside i prefer to use the fiber cable directly.
An ex of what i’m referring to:

Appreciate any other tips or info.

If you are talking about the fiber provided by your ISP in a FTTH situation, the Omada media converter won’t work. Your ISP most likely operates a GPON (gigabit passive optical network) or XG-PON (10 gigabit PON). As in any network, the devices you connect to it need to be compatible with each other. The FC311A-20 only understands the IEEE 802.3z standard (a gigabit Ethernet-over-fiber standard from 1998) and it’s not compatible with PON. This sort of device is designed to be used in pairs. You buy two of them, one for each end of the distance you’d like to cover with fiber.

The Digitus media converter might work if you get the appropriate SFP module that fits your ISP’s network (i.e., GPON as mentioned above, though you should verify that that’s indeed what is being used).

The safest bet would be to use an appropriate ONT (optical network terminal). That’s simply a modem that converts fiber to Ethernet and these are readily available. Again, find out which technology your ISP uses (e.g. GPON), as that will determine which type of ONT you need.

Thanks for the info. I will try to call on monday and ask but the support is pretty lousy. The first line is hard to get past 99% of the time.
They know even less then i do and for more technical questions they always dodge it from my experience. They want to lock you into their shitty hardware.
I share the cable i use if that tells you anything more.

Does this answer any of the questions?

I use the blue one from this package

sorry can’t add more then 1 image so i had to put multiple posts…this is the spec for the SFP’s

Yeah, it’s my experience too that first-level support on most ISPs is utterly useless if you have technical questions.

What is the device shown in the picture where the SFP module is plugged into? Is that the ISP-provided router? Because if you’re currently using that with a Unifi SFP module and it works, chances are the Digitus media converter you linked (or any other media converter that has an SFP port instead of a fixed optical input) will work as well. Also from what I can tell, the UF-SM-1G-S is designed to be used in AONs (active optical networks), so it looks like your ISP does in fact not use PON.

If by any chance you have a switch with an SFP port laying around, you can use that as a media converter as well.

The device is a netgate 6100

I practically had to break the ISP router to take out the fiber cable. And bought the SFP myself and tried it on the netgate 6100 and it just worked
Pure luck i guess.

So as you say i could use any device with SFP port. The Digitus should then work.
Thank you for the help!

Just to let you know, it worked fine! Got this:

Similar to the Digitus.
Works great.

Thanks for the help @paolo
