EZ Pass hacking & your privacy

For those who are not aware, EZ-Pass is a service provided to state governments as a means of unifying collection of road tolls and at least from the state’s perspective simplifying the process of collecting said tolls. What isn’t disclosed is just how often they get triggered for things that have nothing to do with what they weren’t intended for, tracking your movements.

Ideas like this at least will notify you just how often your EZ Pass RFID is being scanned in areas that aren’t collecting tolls.

Hackaday.IO had another project like this except it recorded to a log on an SD card and included visual indicator.

Interesting, but buying the components at Radio Shack? Do they still exist?

I wonder if there is a two way data exchange, like maybe the ID of the transceiver so you could start making a map with an ID pointer?

Carry this a step farther, and you could interrupt your device so it only sends your data when the ID matches a list of toll booths and none of the rest of the tracking locations get your tag number.

This is interesting since that news article posted back in 2013. I have the newest transponder with a 3 position switch to use around California roads. Will have to check it out.

Heh RS if they do exist doesn’t sell components anymore, the last one I remember seeing in my hometown went to hocking overpriced crap like gold plated USB cords and cell phones (with a nice upcharge for their bottom line). Then it disappeared eventually.
Now you can pretty much order anything you want from a PCB maker in China and from suppliers like Mouser.
