Got the FileBrowser app fired up pretty easily but now I am thinking about use cases and permissions.

One use case is using this as a simple file store for users saving files someplace. Eh, not a compelling use case for me.

Another is giving web access to a SMB Share Drive I have mapped to my windows computers. This has my interest.

The issue I think I have to deal with is permissions though.

My SMB Share has a bunch of files created in my windows clients and saved to SMB. FileShare can see the top level directories but not any of the files.

Looking at the windows file permissions I see this…

But I am running FileBrowser as the Apps user in TrueNAS.

I think I am opening a can of worms from a security perspective.

You have to choose one or the other because the docker app has its own ACL’s built in the app for access. You cannot use it for both SMB and File app.

I followed along with the video tutorial but didn’t do enough research to learn the nuances.

I’ll research more but if you are saying that I could configure it for the former at the expense of the latter then that would be fine for me.

I’m saying SMB uses the ACL’s in truenas and the file manager app has to have its own permissions from truenas in order to read the data from the dataset. There is the conflict, can’t have both. But, when you give the file manager app the permissions from truenas then you create accounts in the app to then give permissions to the users you have to have access to only what they need.
