I was watching the video below and wondering if Tom still uses an unmanaged switch or a physically separate network for the security/control plane stuff. Something I’ve often wondered how to handle.
In this case, since I live in Brazil and the equipment costs are much higher than in the US, I sometimes use unmanaged switches, but only for access.
Due to the high cabling costs nowadays, I have been installing a switch in each sector and pulling cables from it to the core switch, for clients who cannot invest in managed switches for their entire environment.
However, doing this ends up causing problems, such as, if you want to install a Unifi, you will need to pull a cable directly from the main switch or some other managed switch further away and there is no way to do the segregation.
However, I do not think unmanaged switches are useless nowadays, they are viable options, depending on the environment you are using and its security criticality.
