Ive browsed the TrueNas forums but its still unclear to me as to the state of the FreeBSD version of TrueNas.
I need a storage target for my XCP-ng and Proxmox nodes and Ive been using my Scale server the only problem is it updates so frequently i have to shutdown my VMs often, patch scale then reboot and all this time my vms are down. Now Core is stable gets update but not as often, Problem jails don’t work so no Syncthing and the future is uncertain from my understanding. So is a storage target still a valid reason to use core.
Trying to budget for two new storage servers. This way when one needs work, I can migrate my VMs to the second, do the work and migrate back, then do the work on the second storage. Doing that now with Core. There’s probably an easier way, but this gets work done.
The second server doesn’t need to be wonderful, it just needs to have enough performance to carry the load and enough storage to handle all of the VMs. That said, my VMs are very basic with no big databases. A couple Windows AD, a few more Windows servers, and a few Linux servers doing simple tasks.
I did consider it using 2 zimaboards with 10gb sfp+ and a couple of SSDs to do this even ha with DRBD. I like your idea. its simple gets the job done. but my question still remains what is the future of core and is it still viable for say my use case. I appreciate your response though. thanks
Of, yeah, in my opinion, Core is doomed. I really think Scale will be the future and Core may only have a few more years. I said this back a couple years ago, and I’ll stick to it. I’m guessing that soon Scale will be everything and more compared to Core and then there may not be a logic is paying for two different development cycles.
That said, Core is lasting longer than I initially predicted. But I’ve also been moving things over to Scale in my production systems. These are just very basic file shares, so not a difficult task to migrate.
I’ve been watching this transition to Scale and here’s my plan for my company (and home lab):
I also use TrueNAS as just a NAS—filesharing and VM storage. I’m going to stick with Core for the time being and gradually replace any extra services I’ve piled on over the years (a few things running in jails) with their one VMs/containers and then I’m going to install a bare bones OS and import my zpools. Probably FreeBSD, but maybe Ubuntu or Debian. Just using it for shared storage, I thinks that’s a pretty reasonable task.
Thank you for all the feed back and opinions.
I think its safe then to say TrueNAS Core is going the way of the dodo.
Its a shame though I found FreeBSD to be solid ,stable and simple.
So im going to use Scale as a storage target for my VM stack and set a stricter update policy for my setup so i don’t need to reboot as often but keep scale up to date so it does not fall behind.
