Yesterday morning i received an alert from my TRUENAS server “* Pool VDEV state is ONLINE: One or more devices has experienced an unrecoverable error. An attempt was made to correct the error. Applications are unaffected”
So went to check on the system the pool status was showing online and big cross next to it. Checked the disks and one disk was showing 2 error under checksum for one disk. However on checking the smart tests, it was showing completed without error. But when i checked the smart parameters i found 2 concerning lines
5 Reallocated_Sector_Ct
191 G-Sense_Error_Rate
I guessed this disk was failing and needs to be replaced and got busy getting the invoice for a RMA.
Later in the day i had power failure in area which triggers a shutdown of TrueNAS. Today after powerup when i checked the server, the alert was gone, there is no trace of that alert or the error anywhere. The Pool status is back to normal Online and Tick next to it.
I checked the disk that was showing the error and the SMART parameters still show the same values but everything else seems fine. The checksum errors are zero.
So what do i gather from this, it was a transient error or does the hard disk needs replacement ?? I cant figure out how the error corrected itself until and unless the reboot cleared out all the errors. But that not right because if the hard disk is going to fail the error should be more permanent.
Now i am not sure if i should send the disk for a RMA, more importantly I am not sure if the vendor will accept the disk for RMA with just these 2 error lines.
Sounds like there was an CRC error that was corrected when the system restarted. The drive vendors vendors sometimes want their tests run on the drive before allowing an RMA. Look for the RAW_VALUE number for Reallocated_Sector_Ct to show some bad sectors to know there is an issues.
I did check and these 2 parameters have values when they should be zero
Reallocated_Sector_Ct has a raw value of 8
G-Sense_Error_Rate has a raw value of 4959
I checked informally with my vendor and he says usually HDD RMA services are outsourced to third parties and they accept RMA only if the HDD fails the tests of their utility. Or SMART reports major errors.
In the case above SMART passes successfully and does not report any error.
I’d still buy a spare and have it ready. But this is not the first time I’ve seen something similar on mine and I think it went another 2 years before giving more problems. I upgraded my entire pool at that time because I needed more storage anyway.
Just to update on this issue. Something weird is happening. I now have 2 disks showing checksum error. The earlier disk that was causing this error is no longer showing this error. These are 2 different disks. But the SMART data on both disk is clean. Further the errors disappear after i reboot machine and then in about 30 minutes the error comes back. I notice the errors come during the scrub process running before the errors come.
I am running TrueNAS-13.0-U2 and just upgraded the Pool to get the benefits of the new ZFS changes. This was done about a week back. The error has been showing up from yesterday.
Any idea how to troubleshoot this error. The screenshot of the error is shown below.
This is for the first disk - which shows 3 checksum errors

EDIT Sorry Just noticed that the second disk was the same one that reported and error last time. But i changed the position of the disk in my array. hence the device name got changed. But the first disk is showing no SMART errors
EDIT: Update. I shutdown the server removed, cleaned and reattached all the HDDs and HDD cables and powered up the server. So far the error has not recurred.
Generally speaking, it looks like your drives should have plenty of life left in them. Might just be an odd firmware glitch, is there a newer firmware that you can apply?
All that said, I haven’t used Fujitsu in a very long time. Since these are Enterprise grade, I’d expect them to live for a good long time.
Cables that are not fully seated in their connectors and / or have to sharp of bends (improper radius-ed) can cause these types of errors. Such errors may be intermittent showing up as the system temperature changes. Start with the basics and work up the ladder of complexity.
