Comcast default gateway not pingable after 'network upgrade'

All,
Comcast recently performed a network upgrade in the area - my internet was down for a few hours. When the system came back up, my pfsense router was unhappy because the default gateway served by their DHCP was not ping’able. I’ve since set the monitor ip on that gateway to be 8.8.8.8, hoping that google dns will be a good uptime canary.

I care about the gateway monitoring since I’ve got a cellular modem as a backup. I don’t want to burn my cell quota unnecessarily.

Has anyone else encountered this? Any other mitigation advice?

You should be fine using google as the monitoring IP.

Another option is to use the ISP DNS servers, as this should have the minimal hops on the internet

Yeah, I thought about the ISP DNS server. However, I trust Google’s infrastructure more than Comcast’s.
