For those needing a 2.5gbps Intel connection, you can always pull the WIFI card and put in an a+e Intel i226 single port card. You will need to find a way to route the cable to the outside world, which may not be pretty. Mine were about $30 shipped from ebay and took a couple weeks to arrive. Snipped this out of a listing:
a+ei226

I have a couple of these cards for my HP T740, they work, and work with ESXi (Realtek do not), but getting the connection outside the case is holding me up. Not going to hack a hole and hotglue the connector, so taking some time to see how I can solve this. No performance testing yet due to the install problem. You can get some with a PCIe bracket, but if you have a slot, why not just put in a real card?

I’m still looking into swapping my old HP DL360 Gen8 for some newer Ryzen 7 4800h or 5800h based mini PCs. The big issue for me is can I find one with an Intel 2.5gbps or will I need to hack one of the a+e cards into the system. If they go on sale cheap enough, I’ll buy a few and start the migration for lower power/heat/noise in my lab. The 8 cores would be “nicer” over the 4 cores in the T740, my VMware lab is setting up on a pair of T740 right now, and it’s OK for now (also 10gbps with the T740).
