Backing up Synology to Glacier - error

Sorry if I’m posting in the wrong area or if this has been addressed, but I can not figure this out. I want to back up my synology NAS to Amazon Glacier. I created an AWS account, I created a user for the backups, I directly assigned the “full glacier” permissions to the user. Generated access keys.

in synology, I installed the glacier backup app. I set a new backup and copy and paste the access key, secret key and make sure my region is correct. I get testing connection failed.

troubleshooting:

Ive deleted and recreated the keys on AWS (more times than I can remember)

I’ve deleted and created a new user multiple times (tried adding the user to the glacier full access group as well as direct assigments, of course this also means new key creation.

I ran a packet capture on my UDM and confirmed the TCP connection is built as well as the TLS connection.

I let it sit 24 hours in case something needed to propagate in AWS land, same (nondescript error)

“Testing connection failed”

does anyone have an idea?

Amazon does not support that version of Glacier anymore. From their communication:

“After careful consideration, we have decided to stop accepting new customers for Amazon Glacier (original standalone vault-based service) starting on December 15, 2025. There will be no change to the S3 Glacier storage classes as part of this plan.”

Not sure if this helps, since the stop of this service is only supposed to take effect on Dec 15.

Did you create a the same user in Synology? Does that user have appropriate permissions? I used the Glacier Backup app in Synology for a long time, but I recently ditched it. It is a PITA to work with, especially if you want to delete vaults. You can’t do it in the console, you have to install the AWS CLI on a local machine and do it from there. It also takes forever to do anything because it insists on scanning all the volumes before you can delete anything, It literally took me hours to delete stuff. I am sure part of it was lack of familiarity on my part.

I switched to Synology’s C2 service. It is flawless and the difference in expense wasn’t enough to deter me. ($0.0049/gb for 1 TB vs $0.0036/gb)

Thanks Louie, when you say “Did you create a the same user in Synology?” what do you mean by same user? from the Synology perspective, it uses just the keys, unless im missing something. yes, it has full access to glacier as well.

I signed up with C2, gave up on glacier. thanks for the advice

MY bad. I was thinking of using Rsync. You’re right, no user needed.

The C2 website is pretty cool too. Synology C2 Storage

I think you need to be logged in to view this page.

yeah, i signed up with C2. setup my backups and after a few attempts i think i have it sorted the way I need. thanks for the advice
