I just did a demo on this product which was created from former leaders at Datto. Anyone have an opinion on their offering and how it stacks up to other backup options?
In a nutshell, it’s a device that is onsite preconfigured with the amount of backup storage you need and you install an agent on the server(s) you are backing up and it pulls it to the device and sends it to their own cloud setup. You can spin up a vm of any server in minutes whether local on the device or a cloud server if the location is destroyed. It’s also fully encrypted.
Anyway, just curious if anyone has used them and if they’re happy.
I have not tested it but feels like they just let the clock run out on their non-compete and built DATTO again. Is it any better than what you can do with a Synology?
Good question Tom. I’ve not waded in the Synology waters as of yet, so this product being more turnkey just seems appealing to me. And I’m not 100% sure how Synology backs up to the cloud, but I assume it’s going to be some sort of third-party setup, whereas this is all the same company. Obviously, there is a price to pay, but also peace of mind. Would be interested in a video review if you end up looking into it. Appreciate ya!
Out of curiosity, is Synology still requiring a specific brand of drive / set of drives? Thought I heard something about it and wasn’t too sure how I’d feel about a NAS vendor trying to lock people into something like that.
There are several commercial companies out there with similar features and I don’t really have time to review commercial services I don’t plan to use.
Ahh missed that. Thanks Maximus!
