I have a number of customers asking me for a European alternative to Ubiquiti. It seems that Mikrotik could be a good option. Do any of you have good or bad experince with Mikrotik and could I build some similar to what Unifi offers with Mikrotik devices?
The Mikrotik CRS switch/router are decent, I haven’t used any CSS switches, and I haven’t used any AP. And they do not have a centralized management system like the UniFi devices have.
Firewalls you have OPNsense either DIY or buy one of their versions. Either choice is going to cost an arm and a leg with the RAM and storage increases. It’s a bad time to buy anything right now.
Hardware and software wise Mikrotik makes good stuff, but they don’t have support for some of the more advanced features like user traffic identification, next gen firewall, really any sort of builtin analytics. But they cover the fundamentals really well. HOWEVER, the learning curve is really steep for anyone who doesn’t really know network fundamentals. You have to configure everything as you want.
Mikrotik is not that bad, some fairly high end facilities use their products in their infrastructure. Or at least if you believe the marketing information, ISP, colleges, etc have large numbers of their products in them, pretty much all in the EU.
The Microtik ecosystem has a very consistent internal logic that I appreciate every time I touch it. I don’t run a lot of their gear—just a few routers and a 10Gb switch—but I’ve grown to like the Winbox/Webfig interface and I really like the Mikrotik command line.
if you haven’t yet found it, look up the Network Berg on YouTube and you’ll get lots of good info about how the system works.
Mikrotik works and they have some very affordable options, I have used some of there routers in voip enviornments, but nothing like unifi, more similar to the ubiquiti edge series as far as software. Much more difficult to work on than the unifi interface
I bought a Mikrotik WAP a five years ago believing I could install OpenWRT on it. Nope. My bad. Anyway, I ended up using Mikrotik’s RouterOS and it worked great for years. It was a steep learning curve. RouterOS had/has roughly 4,379 more features than I needed. One of the tools Mikrotik expected me to use for initial configuration was called WinBox but it only ran on Windows which pissed me off because I was Microsoft free back then. Later they released a WinBox for iPhone app. I really like the idea of buying hardware and software made in Europe.
This is why i always recommend Teltonika. You can install OpenWRT on almost all of their network devices. Its easy to use with great documentation, support and community. The only downside is price. But thats the name of the game when it comes to industrial grade devices.
Siemans used to have networking equipment made in Europe, might have been bought by Fujitsu (or the other way ‘round).
And yes, RouterOS have all the features, whether you need them or not and it can look imposing because of this. I always set up new Mikrtik from the console port to set the IP or the maintenance port (I think it has DHCP server running when new).
