Anti-virus recommendations for macOS

I have a MacBook Pro 2016 running macOS Monterey, and I have been using McAfee Total Protection for years. I have been noticing performance issues for some time now and have recently had an issue that prompted me to post on a python dev forum and many people commented that I shouldn’t be using McAfee as it is sub-par.

I was hoping that I could get recommendations for a replacement anti-virus software. I have looked online and there doesn’t seem to be a consensus across the many comparison/ranking sites I have looked at.

I’ve had good luck with bitdefender and sentinelOne for windows and Linux. We had a few Mac’s in our enterprises and seemed to work well, but I wasn’t a regular user of the Mac’s that had those AV’s installed.
